192nd Fighter Group ANG Byrd IAP, Richmond, Virginia F-16C/D, C-26A 'VA' 149th Fighter Squadron

The 149th FS is the group's flying unit, which converted from the A-7D to the F-16C during July 1991. The unit was established as the 149th Fighter Squadron in June 1947 with P-47Ds. The 149th was activated from March 1951 until December 1952, when it was redesignated a Fighter-Bomber Squadron. The 149th became a Bombardment Squadron in November 1953 with B-26s. The unit was redesignated the 149th FIS in June 1957 and the 149th TRS in April 1958 before reverting to Fighter-Interceptor Squadron status two months later, despite operating the B-26 throughout, along with a handful of F-84Fs, F-86Es and a RB-57B. The F-84F finally entered service in November 1958 as the 149th TFS. The 149th was mobilized between October 1961 and August 1962, with the 192nd TFG assigned in October 1962. The unit flew the F-105D from January 1971 until converting to the A-7D in June 1981.
